Parece que toda a gente que eu conheço esteve doente neste mês que passou. Não sou excepção. Estive mal de saúde pelo menos durante estas duas últimas semanas, se não mais. Originalmente, queria que o segundo capítulo do “Shreds” consistisse de outra entrevista/crítica a uma banda pouco conhecida. Infelizmente, as coisas não aconteceram assim. A doença prevaleceu, e então decidi falar de dois discos que tenho estado a ouvir nestas últimas semanas: «Court In The Act» e «Life Sentence» da banda pioneira de metal e proto-thrash europeia, Satan.
Os Satan, para além de terem o nome mais metal do metal, já deram umas voltas valentes por aí. Sobreviveram a numerosas alterações de formação, e até a três mudanças de nome de banda (Blind Fury, The Kindred, e Pariah).
Antes disso tudo, no entanto, a banda lançou uma obra-prima: o «Court In The Act» de 1983. Era rápido, agressivo, e ao nível de qualquer outra banda da NWOBHM da altura. Liricamente, a banda cobria as atrocidades da guerra, os feitos dos Vikings, as promessas quebradas dos brancos aos nativos americanos, e ser condenado ao inferno por toda a eternidade (estão a ver, o tipo de coisa que todas as bandas de metal têm falado para aí nos últimos 25 anos).
Avançando até 2013. A banda, e a sua formação original, lançou outra obra-prima: «Life Sentence». O álbum pega onde o «Court In The Act» ficou. As ideias base e a musicalidade estão lá em grande. A produção é impecável, e a capa é espectacular. Temas como «Twenty Twenty Five» e «Siege Mentality» contêm tons clássicos de guitarra, limpos, e às vezes vozes bem agudas, para além de solos melódicos a rasgar. Basicamente, os Satan sabem o que estão a fazer. «Life Sentence» está destinado a ser mais um clássico. Os que gostam dos Ghost – ou Ghost B.C. – estariam a fazer um favor a si próprios se descobrissem os Satan.
Ouvindo os dois álbums de seguida fez-me esquecer que estou doente. Enfim, quase. Acredito mais no metal do que na medicina. Ouçam estes dois discos e liguem-me de manhã… se sobreviverem.

Seems like everyone I know has been sick this past month. I am no exception. I’ve been under the weather for at least the past two weeks, if not more. Originally, I had wanted the second installment of “Shreds” to consist of another little-known band interview/review. Unfortunately, things did not turn out that way. Sickness prevailed, so I decided to talk about two records I have listened to these past weeks: «Court In The Act» and «Life Sentence» by European metal and proto-thrash pioneers Satan.
Satan, besides having metal’s most metal moniker, have been around the block a time or two. They’ve survived numerous lineup changes and even three full band name changes (Blind Fury, The Kindred, and Pariah).
Before all that, though, the band released a masterpiece: 1983’s «Court In The Act». It was fast, aggressive, and on par with any other NWOBHM act of the time. Lyrically, the band covered the atrocities of war, exploits of Vikings, the white-man’s broken promises to Native Americans, and being condemned to Hell for all eternity. (You know, things almost every metal band have talked about for the past 25 years or so.)
Fast-forward to 2013. The band, and its original lineup, has released yet another masterpiece: «Life Sentence». The album takes up where «Court In The Act» left off. The core ideas and musicianship are there in spades. The production is spot on, and the cover art is spectacular. Songs like «Twenty Twenty Five» and «Siege Mentality» contain classic guitar tones, clean, and sometimes high-pitched vocals, and ripping, melodic solos. Bottom line, Satan knows what they are doing. «Life Sentence» is destined to be another classic. Those into Ghost—or Ghost BC—would be doing themselves a favor in checking out Satan.
Listening to the two albums back-to-back made me forget about being sick. Well, almost. I trust in metal more than I trust in medicine. Take in these two records and call me in the morning… if you survive.
