O meu nome é Statts. Sou fã de metal há 25 anos, mais ou menos. Serviu como banda-sonora da minha juventude, tocando como pando de fundo enquanto eu e os meus amigos atirávamos ovos aos carros que passavam. Acompanhou-me em viagens de carro, curtas e longas. Estava lá quando me casei, e depois de me ter divorciado. Ajudou-me a atravessar alguns dos dias mais escuros da minha vida, e fez-me sorrir quando pensei que todos os sorrisos tivessem acabado. Senti a irmandade de fazer parte de muitas bandas ao longo dos anos. É extremamente poderoso e acho que não estaria ainda aqui se não fosse pelo metal.
Levei um tiro no pescoço à queima-roupa em 28 de Junho de 2008. Quse morri, mas de alguma forma encontrei a força para parar um rio de sangue que saía do meu corpo usando a minha própria cabeça e pescoço como torniquete. Fiquei paralizado do peito para baixo como resultado do ataque. Sou considerado um quadriplégico. Tem sido a minha “normalidade” há cerca de cinco anos. Aprendi tanto nestes anos. Sinto que cresci como pessoa de muitas formas, o suficiente para várias vidas, talvez mais.
A minha história é a razão para esta rubrica existir. O José Carlos Santos teve a gentileza de me convidar para escrever para a LOUD! depois de ler a versão que pode ser encontrada aqui.

A primeira edição é uma curta crítica e entrevista com a banda de Portland, Oregon, os Usnea. Tocam um doom de um estilo diferente da maior parte das bandas, e gravarm um disco de estreia auto-intitulado impressionante e distinto. Riffs espessos, vozes poderosas, piscando o olho ao black metal, death e funeral doom, sludge, drone e até psicadélia, mantendo as coisas interessantes em cada um dos temas épicos que conpõem o lançamento. Liricamente, os Usmea questionam a condição humana e desafiam as normas da sociedade. As coisas fixes, estão a ver? A produção e técnica são topo de gama. São alguns dos tipos mais simpáticos que encontrei na comunidade do metal. Pareceram tão excitados como eu por terem uma entrevista na LOUD!.

Statts: Quando é que se formaram?
Justin: Formámo-nos em Agosto de 2011. Lancei o chamado para formar uma banda pesada nova. O Zeke tinha acabado de se mudar para Portland. Tocámos juntos nos The Makai e nos Amarok, por isso quando ele mostrou interesse fiquei muito entusiasmado. Contactei o Joel, que é um dos melhores técnicos de som ao vivo de Portland, com o intuito de ele tocar connosco, ele gostou da ideia, e nós os três começámos a partir daí.
Statts: Tinham algum som em específico como objectivo quando formaram a banda?
Zeke: Inicialmente, o Justin e eu começámos a fazer jams sem expectativas de onde isso pudesse ir. Ele tinha estado numa banda de stoner metal, eu tinha estado numa banda de funeral doom. Rapidamente se tornou claro que estávamos destinados a tocar doom sludgy e malévolo com algumas influências de noise e psicadélia. Originalmente estava a tocar guitarra e ajudei a construir as quatro primeiras canções que escrevemos (as que aparecem no álbum), mas depois de falharmos algumas tentativas de encontrar o baterista certo, decidi mudar-me para a bateria. Estou, na verdade, mais feliz na bateria, é um instrumento mais novo para mim do que a guitarra e sinto-me muito mais criativo. Além disso, encontrar um baterista de doom é praticamente impossível. Foi mesmo a medida certa.
Justin: Quando o Zeke se mudou para a bateria, convidei o Johnny para vir experimentar tocar guitarra connosco. Tinha-o visto a tocar há pouco tempo numa banda de covers dos Iron Maiden com três guitarras no Halloween (uma tradição em Portland na qual quase todas as bandas participam todos os anos) e sabia que ele era uma força com quem podíamos contar. Encaixou-se perfeitamente, e a formação ficou assim solidificada.
Statts: Obviamente, são influenciados por várias bandas e géneros diferentes. Quais são algumas das bandas que admiram?
Johnny: Sou um grande fã dos Mouth Of The Architect. Em parte porque são originários do local onde cresci, mas acima de tudo porque a composição deles é excelente. Na verdade, nunca os tinha ouvido até o Justin pôr um disco a tocar na viagem de regresso de um concerto em Washington; tínhamos tocado ao lado de um lago gelado cerca de 1.5km acima do nível do mar. Foi a banda perfeita para o tempo aterrorizante que tivemos que suportar para voltar para casa. Também foi bom ter algo em que me focar enquanto o Joel me esmagava num jogo de xadrez!
Justin: Número um para mim serão os YOB. Não só são também locais, mas são pessoas fantásticas, são uma das melhores bandas de metal do mundo, na minha opinião. Foi uma honra partilhar o palco com eles. Outras influências são vastas: Asunder, Graves at Sea, Mournful Congregation, Evoken, Thou, Cough, Bolt Thrower, Anhedonist, Bell Witch, Samothrace, Weakling, Ulver, Corrupted, Khanate, Burning Witch, Neurosis, Ludicra, Vastum, Electric Wizard, Noothgrush, Moss, Loss, Dead Congregation, Worship, Ash Borer, Whitehorse, Blut Aus Nord, Amebix, Dystopia, Black Sabbath… a lista poderia continuar durante dias. Muito doom, death, black metal, punk e crust; até algum post rock. No que diz respeito aos temas líricos e estímulos intelectuais, o Joel e eu somos ávidos leitores e cépticos, portanto somos inspirados por pessoas como Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. LeGuin, H.P. Lovecraft (tirando o seu racismo e classismo), Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Naomi Klein, etc.
Statts: Há planos para ir para tour em breve?
Zeke: Acabámos de lançar o nosso primeiro LP e vamos fazer uma digressão na costa Oeste em Maio. São duas semanas que incluem datas em Washington, Oregon, California e Arizona. Nesta altura, não estamos com grande pressa para fazer uma digressão a nível nacional. Estamos a escrever o nosso segundo álbum e queremos focar-nos nisso, enquanto tocamos nos nossos locais favoritos da costa Oeste. Só damos concertos há um ano, por isso há muitos sítios na zona onde ainda não tocámos. Dito isto, provavelmente embarcaremos na tour nacional logo depois do lançamento do nosso segundo LP, algures pela Primavera ou Verão de 2014.
Justin: Vamos tocar no Dead Fest em Oakland em Agosto, portanto vamos fazer uma mini-tour para isso. Espero que toquemos na Europa em suporte do nosso segundo LP. Isso é algo que todos gostaríamos imenso de fazer.
Statts: Descrevam-nos sucintamente a cena do metal em Portland. Sítios e bandas favoritas.
Zeke: A cena é maravilhosa. A quantidade de talento e originalidade desta cidade continua a impressionar-me. É verdadeiramente inspirador viver numa cidade com tantas bandas boas. Acho que nos ajuda a desenvolvermo-nos como artistas, e a termos iniciativa de criar alguma coisa melhor, mais original e mais interessante com cada projecto. Por exemplo, os nossos amigos dos Stoneburner e dos Ephemeros, que tocaram no concerto de lançamento do nosso álbum, são bandas incríveis, e enquanto amigos e companheiros de criação de malhas pesadas, inspiraram-nos, sem dúvida. Tal como inúmeras outras bandas da cena local: YOB, Atriarch, Norska, Aldebaran, Knelt Rote, Burials, The Body, Eight Bells, Rabbits, Honduran, Nasalrod, Transient, Elitist, Death Machine, Hellshock, Tragedy, etc.
Johnny: Sem dúvida, aprecio a existência da Blackwater Records. É uma sala DIY para todas as idades, onde temos a oportunidade de ver algumas bandas verdadeiramente incríveis num ambiente sem merdas. Tenho tendência a agrupar todo o Noroeste como uma grande cena, e os Bell Witch estão entre o melhor que temos para oferecer. Passaram a ser uma das minhas bandas absolutamente favoritas – o tipo de coisa que levaria para uma ilha deserta. Não pensei grande coisa quando ouvi o disco pela primeira vez, mas fiquei impressionado quando os vi ao vivo. Agora ouço o disco várias vezes por semana. Tivemos a oportunidade de tocar com eles algumas vezes, e continuo a ficar excitado com isso de cada vez.
Justin: Eles disseram tudo, Porland e a zona do Pacific Northwest é altamente!
Statts: Finalmente, algum facto aleatório da banda que queiram partilhar com o mundo?
Johnny: Aprecio verdadeiramente – e fico até sem saber o que dizer – a resposta positiva que temos recebido até agora. Gosto muito de tocar música com estes tipos e espero que tenhamos a oportunidade de fazer o que estamos a fazer durante muito tempo.

ENGLISH VERSION
My name is Statts. I have been a fan of metal for the past 25 years, give or take. It has served as a soundtrack to my youth, blasting in the background as friends and I threw eggs at passing cars. It has accompanied me on road trips, both short and long. It was there before I got married; and there after I was divorced. It has gotten me through some of the darkest days of my life; and has made me smile when I thought all of my smiles were gone. I have felt the brotherhood of being in many bands over the years. It is most powerful and I don’t think I would still be here without it.
I was shot in the neck at point-blank range on June 28, 2008. I almost died, but somehow found the strength to stop a river of blood from exiting my body using my own head and neck as a tourniquet. I was left paralyzed from the chest down as a result of the attack. I am considered a quadriplegic. It has been my “normal” for almost five years now. I’ve learned so much in those years. I feel I’ve grown as a person in many ways; enough for a few lifetimes, maybe more.
My story is the reason this column now exists. José Carlos Santos was kind enough to invite me to write for LOUD! after reading the version found here.

The first installment is a short review and interview of Portland, Oregon’s own Usnea. The band play doom in a style unlike most, and have recorded a distinctive and impressive self-titled debut album. Thick riffs, powerful vocals, nods to black metal, death and funera doom, sludge, drone, and even psychedelia, keep things interesting on each of the epic tracks comprising the release. Lyrically, Usnea question the human conditon and challenge societal norms. You know, the good stuff. Production and musicianship are top-notch. The guys in Usnea are also some of the nicest I’ve encountered in the metal community. They seemed to be just as excited as I was to get this interview done for LOUD!.
Say hello to your new favorite band.
Statts: When did you guys form?
Justin: We formed in August of 2011. I had put out the call to form a new heavy band. Zeke had just moved to Portland. We had played together in The Makai and Amarok, so when he showed interest I was very excited. I approached Joel, one of Portland’s best live sound engineers, about playing with us; he was into it, so we three went from there.
Statts: Did you have a specific sound you were going for when forming the band?
Zeke: Initially, Justin and I started jamming and had no expectation of where it was going to go. Justin had been in a stoner metal band. I’d been in a funeral doom band. It became apparent pretty quickly that we were destined to play nasty, sludgy doom with some noise and psychedelic influences. Originally, I was playing guitar and helped craft the first four songs we wrote (the ones appearing on the album), but after a few attempts at finding the right drummer failed, I decided to switch to drums. I’m actually happier on drums; it’s a little newer to me than guitar and I feel a lot more creative. Plus, finding a doom drummer is next to impossible. It was really the right move.
Justin: Once Zeke switched to drums, I invited Johnny to come try out on guitar. I had recently seen him playing in a triple guitar Iron Maiden cover band on Halloween (a Portland tradition almost all of the bands participate in every year) and knew he was force to reckoned with. He fit in perfectly and the line-up was solidified.
Statts: Obviously, you are influenced by quite a few different bands and genres. Who are some of the bands you look up to?
Johnny: I’m a big fan of Mouth of the Architect. Partially because they’re local to where I grew up, but mostly because their songwriting is great. I hadn’t actually heard them until Justin played them on the way back from a show in Washington; we had played next to a frozen lake some 5,000 feet above sea level. It was the perfect soundtrack to the terrifying weather we had to endure on the way home. It was also nice to have something to focus on while Joel crushed me in a game of chess!
Justin: Number one for me would be YOB. Not only are they local and extremely awesome people, they are one the best metal bands in the world, in my opinion. It was an honor to share a stage with them. Other influences are vast: Asunder, Graves at Sea, Mournful Congregation, Evoken, Thou, Cough, Bolt Thrower, Anhedonist, Bell Witch, Samothrace, Weakling, Ulver, Corrupted, Khanate, Burning Witch, Neurosis, Ludicra, Vastum, Electric Wizard, Noothgrush, Moss, Loss, Dead Congregation, Worship, Ash Borer, Whitehorse, Blut Aus Nord, Amebix, Dystopia, Black Sabbath… you know, the list could really go on for days. Lots of doom, death, black metal, punk and crust; even some post-rock stuff. As for lyrical themes and intellectual stimulus, Joel and I are avid readers and skeptics, so we are inspired by the likes of Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan, Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. LeGuin, H.P. Lovecraft (minus his racism and classism), Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Naomi Klein, etc.
Statts: Any plans to tour soon?
Zeke: We just released our first LP and we’re doing a West coast tour in May. It’s two weeks long and includes dates in Washington, Oregon, California and Arizona. At this point we’re not in a huge hurry to do a national tour. We’re currently writing our second album and want to focus on that, and playing our favorite spots on the West coast. We’ve only been playing shows for a year, so there are plenty of places in the area we haven’t played yet. That said, we’ll most likely embark on a national tour after release of our second LP; sometime in the Spring or Summer of 2014.
Justin: We are playing Dead Fest in Oakland, CA this August, so we will do a mini-tour for that. Hopefully we will tour Europe in support of our second LP. That is something we’d all really like to do.
Statts. Briefly describe the metal scene in Portland. Any favorite venues or bands?
Zeke: The metal scene in Portland is pretty amazing. The amount of talent and originality in this town continues to astound me. It’s really inspiring living in a town with so many good bands. I think it helps you develop as an artist and push yourself to create something better, more original and more interesting with each project. For example, our buddies in Stoneburner and Ephemeros who played our album release show are amazing bands and, as friends and fellow purveyors of heavy tunes, have definitely inspired us. Countless other bands in the scene have as well: YOB, Atriarch, Norska, Aldebaran, Knelt Rote, Burials, The Body, Eight Bells, Rabbits, Honduran, Nasalrod, Transient, Elitist, Death Machine, Hellshock, Tragedy, etc.
Johnny: I definitely appreciate Blackwater Records being around. It’s a great DIY all ages venue where you have the opportunity to see some really amazing bands in a no bullshit setting. I tend to group together the entire Northwest as one big scene, and Bell Witch is among the best we have to offer. They have become one of my absolute favorite bands—desert island type stuff. I didn’t think much of them when I first heard a recording, but was absolutely blown away seeing them live. Now their record is something I listen to a few times a week. We’ve had the opportunity to play with them a few times and I get excited about it every time.
Justin: These guys said it all, Portland and the Pacific Northwest are awesome!
Statts: Finally, any random fact about the band you’d like the world to know?
Johnny: I’m really appreciative—and a bit overwhelmed—by the positive response we’ve received so far. I enjoy playing music with these dudes very much and hope we have the opportunity to do what we are doing for a long time to come.
